PA Gears Up For America’s Semiquincentennial: What To Know
The Philadelphia area will take center stage for America's 250th birthday this summer.

Pennsylvania will once and again be front and center in the national spotlight this summer as celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, called the Semiquincentennial, get underway.
Planning has been underway for more than a decade. A bipartisan, congressionally mandated "America 250" committee has put together a range of national spectacles to smaller, community activities.
Several events of global interest, meanwhile, are centered in the Philadelphia area.

A time capsule will "ceremonially buried" at Independence National Memorial Park on July 4. The capsule will not be unearthed for another 250 years. It's meant to capture the spirit of America in the first 250 years of its existence.
"Congress charged America250 with preserving a record that reflects the full federation of states and territories and the institutions that shape our civic life," organizers shared. "More than a symbolic gesture, the capsule fulfills a national responsibility: to document who we were at 250 so that Americans in 2276 can look back with clarity and context." Details here.
MLB All-Star Game
Philadelphia will host the Major League Baseball All Star game amid the height of celebrations this summer, with events set beginning July 11. The Home Run Derby is July 13, and the game itself is July 14.
It's been 30 years since Philadelphia last hosted the MLB All Star game. It was held at Veterans Stadium in 1996 and, before that, in 1976, coinciding with the bicentennial. 2026 will mark the first time it is hosted at Citizens Bank Park.
America 250 Concerts
Philadelphia will host some of the handful of America 250 Concerts, with events also planned in other historic cities like New York and Boston. The program invites music ensembles, including school bands, choirs, and orchestras from around the nation to visit these cities integral to the founding of America while performing in various locations.
Specific events have not yet been finalized, but will likely include a wide range of thematically connected performances around the region. Early details here.
FIFA World Cup
A total of six games in soccer's international championship tournament will be played in Philadelphia this summer.
Lincoln Financial Field will host all games. Five of the matches will be in the group stage, along with one in the round of 16.
The round of 16 game will be held on the Fourth of July. Earlier games are set for June 14, June 19, June 22, June 25, and June 27.
The Declaration's Journey
A special exhibit from Griffin Catalyst at Old City's Museum of the American Revolution, "The Declaration's Journey" exhibit tells the story of the nation's founding document.
"With more than 100 nations having integrated its ideals into their own independence movements, the exhibition showcases how American Declaration of Independence has become one of the most influential political documents in modern history, gathering together for the first time in one place some of the most important and rare documents, works of art, and artifacts from around the world that reflect the complex 250-year history and legacy of the Declaration of Independence," the museum says.
The museum will host a series of speaker series, walking tours, and special events throughout the year, but particularly during the summer, to highlight the Declaration.
The exhibit will run through Jan. 3, 2027. Details here.
Philadelphia Flower Show

Cherry Blossom Festival
The Japan America Society of Greater Philadelphia will plant 250 trees in the city to celebration the semiquincentennial.
The annual Cherry Blossom Festival highlights the beauty of the Japanese Sakura, the flowering cherry blossom trees that brighten the city streets of Philadelphia with their distinctive pink blossoms.
While events are programmed throughout the month of April including StrEATS Philly Culinary Tours March 26 to March 30, a Sakura Concert at the Fallser Club on March 2, and special performances in April by Tamagawa University Taiko and Dance, the culmination is Sakura Weekend on April 5 and April 6 in Fairmount Park.
Parking will be available for $10 per vehicle at The Mann Center, 5201 Parkside Ave., as well as along the Avenue of the Republic. Shuttle buses will run from the Independence Visitor Center to the Please Touch Museum.
The festival saw a record 40,000 attendees in 2024.
Wawa Welcome America Festival
The annual, epic concert along the Parkway is even bigger for 2026. It culminates with fireworks on the Fourth of July, but events are planned beginning in mid-June. Details here.
National preparation for the celebration
The official U.S. Semiquincentennial website is at America250.org. The planning committee and partners aim to touch all 350 million Americans in some way and engage them in thoughtful reflection on the nation’s history, its founding principles, and its future.
President Donald Trump has separately organized “Freedom 250” events, including a UFC prize fight on the White House lawn, a “Great American State Fair” on the National Mall, and the Patriot Games, a four-day national high school athletic competition.
There are multiple ways for Pennsylvanians to get involved in the national 250th celebration, starting by sharing their personal narratives through Our American Story or America’s Invitation.
Students in grades 3-12 are invited to share their perspectives on what America means to them in America’s Field Trip, with a chance to earn a trip to some of the nation’s most iconic historic and cultural landmarks. Or they can join in a national effort to make 2026 a landmark year for volunteerism through America Gives.
A new initiative recently announced by the committee seeks ideas for America’s Startup, a national collegiate startup competition created to spotlight early-stage business ideas with the potential to drive America’s future economic, technological, and societal progress.Participants submit a proposal and pitch video outlining their business idea, with selected teams advancing through a multi-stage review process that includes a live pitch experience.
