Women's History Month Volunteer Spotlight: Roxie Tate

Roxie Tate’s older brother wanted her to try everything that he did, and volunteering with the West Manchester Township Fire Department was no different. In 1979, Tate joined the fire department’s junior program at 14, and although her brother relocated and no longer volunteers with the fire department, she has remained an active member for over 40 years.

“I like the physical challenges that come with volunteering. Each and every call is different and is its own unique challenge,” said Tate.

To women interested in following in her footsteps and joining the fire service, Tate encourages them to give it a try. Everyone who steps into the firehouse is welcomed with open arms and provided with the tools necessary to grow and succeed as a volunteer.

“Being around firefighters is just different. It’s like an extended family, and everybody has another's back, not just at the fire house or at a fire scene, but in our personal lives as well. And, if you want to help out, but don’t want to fight fires, you can join as an administrative member,” said Tate.
