Our children are often so terribly afraid of hurting or offending us that they may try to avoid it to a dangerous extreme. There are a multitude of instances where something as simple as a trafffic ticket evokes the fear of disclosure, which can lead to much farther-reaching consequences. These can be costly and punitive at the same time.
They may not want to tell you that they got a speeding ticket. They may pay it to get rid of it, and their license may wind up being subjected to points. Their insurance can go up, and if you are paying the bill, you are the one who gets stung. Maybe even worse, they will ignore the ticket, their license will be suspended, or a warrant may be issued for their arrest. If you are the owner of the vehicle involved, your car might be impounded. Your registration may be suspended. Your insurance may be cancelled.
And tell them not to run away from an accident. And NOT to refuse a breath test, or suspensions can and will automatically result.

These are extreme cases, but they CAn and Do happen without your knowing it. They can be avoided or lessened in consequence.
Tell your youngsters not to be afraid to tell you. Obviously, make sure they use caution in all circumstances. The invincibility they claim to possess is something that should not be assumed by them, or by you. AND NEVER should they take a drop of intoxicating beverage when they are going to get behind the wheel.
These seem like such obvious tenets, but they are often cast aside, and disaster strikes. A person having had anything to drink, which can impair their driving in the least, is involved in an injury-causing, or fatal accident, runs the risk of state prison and a totally ruined future.
Err on the side of caution, BUT have that talk with your children.
And take your own sage advice.
If there are ever any such mishaps or traffic infractions, don;t be afraid to seek legal help. The tragic results far exceed any small fee that will be paid to dispose of the problem at its earliest stage.
I’ll willingly discuss these or any other legal subjects with anyone who wants to know. Kids or parents.
That’s what I’m here for.
