Let's Set the Record Straight: Mattison Avenue is a Great Place to Get an Education

Let's Set the Record Straight: Mattison Avenue is a Great Place to Get an Education

I have been an active parent in my children's school, Mattison Ave. Elementary,
for the past 5 years.  I have also been an advocate for keeping it open.
I can understand how Mattison appears on the surface because when my
first child started Kindergarten over 5 years ago, I researched the school
online and discovered the lower test scores relative to the other WSD
elementary schools.  I immediately made an appointment to meet with the
Principal at that time and, while I cannot recall the conversation, she put my
fears to rest. My son started Kindergarten and we have never looked back.

I firmly believe that the students who attend Mattison Ave. do receive
the best education that WSD offers.  I don't know any parent who would put
the "community" and "walkability" aspects of a school above
the quality of their child's education.  If I did not believe that my
children were receiving the best education my children would not attend
Mattison and I would have never fought to keep it open.  Yes, we have a
higher number of economically disadvantaged students and a racially diverse
student body, but that does not equate to a lesser education or poor learning
environment.  My oldest son is a 4th grade student at Shady Grove this
year and he is performing very well academically just as he did at Mattison. If
he had not received an equitable education at Mattison then he would be
struggling right now.

This will be a very special and emotional year for the Mattison Ave. community.
Our Home & School Association and parents will continue to focus on our children and make this an extra special year for them including the memorable sendoff that they & Mattison Ave. deserve.  We will make sure our kids see this as a new adventure and we will participate in building the excitement for the new changes lies ahead.
