Elections: What Do All of These Positions Mean?

Elections are three weeks away. There are elections for local supervisors can councilpersons as well as school board directors.

But what do all of these titles mean and what do they do?

and Supervisor candidates are both elected to staggered six-year terms. Council member candidates are elected to staged four-year terms.

Council and Supervisors for all municipalities are responsible for the adoption of the annual budget, establishing policies for the conduct of municipal affairs, the enactment of ordinances and resolutions, and approval of contracts and bids. 

Supervisors and the Borough Council are also responsible for appointing officials and member to municipal boards and commissions.

He Ambler Borough Council has the responsibility of appointing the Borough Manager. The Whitpain Township and the Lower Gwynedd Boards of Supervisors are responsible of appointing their respective township managers.

The school board directors are responsible for establishing schools for the education of every person in the district and according to the School Board Policies the board “shall equip, furnish, operate, and maintain such schools.”

They are also charged with creating and enforcing rules and regulations for the management of school affairs and the conduct of students and employees.
