Mark your calendars and join the Wissahickon Valley Watershed Association for the special Old Fashioned Mill Day event at the Evans-Mumbower Mill.
WVWA’s restored 19th century gristmill offers a glimpse into a time when people relied on simple machines and their own resourcefulness. This is a powerful way to let children and families experience how fascinating history can really be.
Begin with a Mill tour and learn from period dressed guides how corn gets ground into cornmeal. Once outside, visit the wigwam of Cheesgookoos, a Lenape Indian to learn about Lenape food ways and cordage. Meet Susan Plaisted who will entertain with hands-on children’s games and Karen Dougherty who will demonstrate lucet, or old fashioned, braiding. Enjoy the lively sounds of the Give and Take Duet.

AARK Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center will delight guests with their owl and other live animals from 1:30 – 3:30. Children will love the hands-on grinding, sifting and kneading dough experiences as well as making sweet butter from cream. Other crowd pleasers include the corn-shucking machine, block & tackle hoist and tin piercing.
The Evans-Mumbower is the only remaining mill in Montgomery County that is operational and open to the public. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
