Local High School Students Pledge To Stop Saying 'Retard'

It's part of a nationwide campaign that came to the area last week.

LANSDALE, PA -- North Penn High School and the Boys & Girls Club held a special event at the school on Wednesday March 2.

Greg Gilrain, the Safety Clubs Coordinator of the Boys & Girls Club, helped to organize the “Spread the Word to End the Word" locally. It's a nationwide campaign to take the pledge to end using the “R” word (“retard” or “retarded”) against individuals with intellectual disabilities, according to a press release.

Gilrain chose to bring this to the North Penn area because he has a brother, David Gilrain with intellectual disabilities, the release states. He has seen some of the things these individuals are faced with on a day-to-day basis. People can help spread the word to end the word at www.r-word.org.
