Mathews Kicks Trojans, Coach Cappa to First Win
In Suburban One League Football action, Wissahickon comes out on top in the first match of the season.
has been waiting for his first regular season game as a head football coach his entire life, or at least since the days he strapped up the pads as a quarterback for his dad and his high school team in western Pennsylvania.

One facet of the game that Cappa stressed in the preseason camp and scrimmages was the special teams battle. During both scrimmages, Cappa trotted senior kicker Dan Mathews out onto the field to attempt field goals, hoping the under fire drill would lead to an advantage once thee season got under way.
“There are three phases of the game we need to win,” said Cappa. “So many high school games are decided by one play and a lot of those happen on special teams. We look to win two of three phases every time we take the field.”

On Friday night, it was Matthews that provided the first half offensive spark for Wissahickon as he blasted a 28-yard field goal, posting the Trojans to a 3-0 lead over the Panthers as the ventured back to the locker room at the half time.
With William Tennent leading 7-3, Randy Frankenfield rumbled into the end zone from one-yard out to give the Trojans a 10-7 after the Mathew Pat with just over seven minutes remaining.
The defense of the Trojans, which was outstanding during the pre season, was stout enough to overcome two Wissahickon turnovers giving Cappa his first win as a head coach and equaling the entire win output of the 2010 campaign.
Next up for the Trojans is a non-league home game against Archbishop Ryan.
