New Lower Gwynedd Elementary Principal Chosen After Antisemitism Ouster

LOWER GWYNEDD, PA — Wissahickon School District this week appointed a new principal at Lower Gwynedd Elementary after the school board in late December fired then-principal Philip Leddy due to antisemitic comments he made in a voicemail to a student's family.

On Monday, the board appointed Miesja M. Cubito as the next Lower Gwynedd Elementary. She will begin her tenure on April 6.

Cubito is in her sixth year as principal at Glenolden School in the Interboro School District in Delaware County.

"I am honored to be chosen as the new principal of Lower Gwynedd Elementary School and am excited to join the Wissahickon community" she said in a statement Tuesday.

She has more than 20 years of experience in education, and has previously served as an assistant principal, technology leader, and district-level collaborator in both the Interboro and Springfield school districts, the district said in announcing her appointment.

Additionally, she was an adjunct professor at Neumann University and Cabrini College, where she designed and taught courses in educational leadership and supported graduate candidates throughout their programs, according to the district.

Her qualifications are many, as well. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood/elementary education from Temple University, a Master of Science in instructional technology from St. Joseph's University, a Master of Science in educational leadership from Drexel University, and a Doctor of Education in educational leadership from Neumann University. She also possesses certifications in Elementary K-6, Instructional Technology Specialist K-12, Business Education K-12, Principal K-12.

"Dr. Cubito’s values, leadership style, and professional experience strongly align with the priorities identified by the LGE community for the next principal," Wissahickon School District Superintendent Mwenyewe Dawan said. "She is compassionate, collaborative, and deeply committed to equity and inclusion. We are confident she will be an outstanding leader for Lower Gwynedd Elementary and will continue to build upon the strong school community already in place."
