Relay for Life Coming to Wissahickon High Saturday

The event is free to the public, but donations are graciously accepted.

Has someone close to you been affected by cancer? Take a chance to honor that person by going to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event this Saturday at the Wissahickon High School track.

Relay For Life is an all-day fundraising event for the ACS with a mix of entertaining activities, fitness, and recognition for those who are fighting against the disease.

With several million people participating in Relay For Life every year, the event has raised billions of dollars for the fight against cancer since 1985.

"Relay For Life is a high-energy, action-packed community event at which participants celebrate cancer survivorship, remember those who have lost their battles with cancer, and fight back against a disease that has taken too much from too many,” said Susan Shafer, a development representative for the American Cancer Society.“Thanks to events like the Relay For Life of the Wissahickon Valley, the American Cancer Society is able to fulfill its lifesaving mission through research, patient programs and services, and advocacy."

There will be activities for children, such as carnival games and face painting, as well as plenty of live music. Volunteers will also be selling food, like pizza and burgers, and all proceeds will go toward the American Cancer Society.

Teams have organized over the last several months, and they have gathered donations and pledges for the relay. Participants will be walking around the track, going the distance that they pledged to their donors.

Even if you didn’t sign up for a Relay for Life team, organizers encourage you to participate by just heading out to the track on Saturday and having a good time.  The event starts at 10 a.m. and will be going all day and night.  Admission is free, but feel free to donate directly to the American Cancer Society at the American Cancer Society Donation Page.
