Shady Grove Families Reading Grace Lin's 'Where the Mountain Meets the Moon'

As part of the school's 'One Book, One Shady Grove' program, children and parents will be reading the book together, and the school will receive a visit from the author in May.

Students at aren’t shooting for the stars. They are shooting for the moon.

As part of the school’s “One Book, One Shady Grove” program, the students and their families are busy reading “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon” by Grace Lin.

This is the third year for the program, which encourages families to read together more often.

“Set a goal to read the book as a family,” said reading specialist and One Book, One Shady Grove committee member Theresa A. Deckebach. “Read it aloud, or take turns reading together with your older children.”

Each family at the school was able to pre-order the children’s book by March 25. It will also be on sale at the school from March 31 to April 1. The book is only $4, 50 percent off the purchase price, through Shady Grove.

Families are asked to read the book together April 4. One month later, the children of Shady Grove will also get to read the book with a special guest: author Grace Lin.

Lin will visit the school on May 4 to read the book aloud to students and guests. The “exciting adventure tale” received a Newberry Honor in 2010.

According to her website, Lin gets ideas “from everywhere” for her books.

“Grace gets ideas from everywhere,” her site says. “That’s why she has to carry her sketchbook with her everywhere, just in case an idea comes to her when she’s on the bus. She never really knows when a good idea will come to her.”

Lin said she plans to write more books in the future, and possibly a companion book to “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon.”

“Grace plans on writing two more novels that will be companion books to ‘Where the Mountain Meets the Moon,’” says her site. “They will not be sequels; they will not continue Minli’s story. But they will be similar, with maybe a crossover character.”

Lin enjoys writing, and she is happy to share her work with children.

“Yes, Grace loves being an author and an illustrator because making books for kids is the best!,” her website says.
