Track and Field - Locals Making a STATE-ment!
Wissahickon track qualifies for seven PIAA state championship events. Monarchs fly to states.
For most track and field programs, the trek to the PIAA State Championships held in Shippensburg is a solitary journey, as it unusual for more than one or two members to qualify for the meet to determine the keystone’s elite.
That being said, following the District One Championships held in Coatesville, the Trojans will carting a busload of tracksters in search of state gold as the Wissahickon Trojans will be represented in seven events including the 110 meter hurdles, 300 meter hurdles, 1600 meter run, 3200 meter run, 800 meter run and the boys 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
In the 800-meter run, Wissahickon senior Hong Cho set a time of 1:50.92 that is currently seventh best in the country, and a new Pennsylvania best time, ranking him first in the state as the best of the best converge on Seth Grove Stadium on Friday and Saturday.

“I am really excited and honored to win this meet,” said Cho. “With the guys that are in this field, you have to go early or you will get boxed in. I had to go early and did all I that I could to stay in front, these guys are really great. It’s been my goal since before cross-country season or indoor track to make it to states. Last year I was on the bubble heading into districts and was lucky enough to get a medal at states, this year I want to win it all.”
Joining Cho in the quest for a state medal will be Max Hairston, who qualified for the 110 meter hurdles on Thursday, posting a time of 14.80 in the prelims, shaved it to 14.67 in the semi finals before and finishing 8th in a driving rain in the final, posting a time of 15.26.

“The rain is tough to run in,” said Hairston. “Hitting a hurdle or slipping is always in the back of your mind, but I'm so glad to make states.”
Hairston will also be competing in the 300-meter hurdles where he posted a state qualifying time of 39.22, but cut almost a second off that time in the finals as he finished 4th overall with a time of 38.75.
The Trojans relay squads carried the momentum from the Penn Relays and parlayed that into a 43.27 qualifying time and eighth place finish, where the 4x400 relay team qualified for states during prelims with a 3:22.91 time and finished third overall in the final with a time of 3:23.09.
Long distance specialist and Wissahickon senior Dillon Farrell completed his eight circuits around the track in a time of 9:26.63, which claimed him a sixth place medal and a spot in the big dance.
Senior Ben Ravetz qualified 13th overall with a time 4:23.51 in the mile which was fast enough to have Ravetz represent the blue and gold in Shippensburg in the 100 meter run.
Gwynedd Mercy Academy, led by sophomore Emma Keenan who qualified for states in the prelims and went out and won the 800 meter run with a time of 211.82 which puts her third in the state currently, will be well represented as well.
The Monarchs 4 x100 and 4x400 relay teams also qualified for states with times of 49.08 and 3:58.85 respectively, claiming a fifth place District One medal in the 4x100.
“Wow, this is surreal,” said Keenan. “It’s a little intimidating to look a crossed the starting line and see who you are running against here, they are all so good. I am so happy to be going to states.”
