Two SASJ Students Donate to Locks of Love

Two St. Anthony-St. Joseph 3rd graders donated their long locks to Locks of Love.

The You Give We Give promotion launched just after Mother’s Day at Best Kept Secret, with two girls donating their long ponytails to benefit children who are suffering from long term medical hair loss. If you make an appointment to donate 8 to 12 inches of hair, the salon will also give you a free haircut.

Serina Hartzel and Noelle Herron, both 3rd graders at St. Anthony-St. Joseph Elementary School were interested in helping children who were suffering from cancer in the form of a hair donation.

“I was nervous at first about cutting my hair, but I’m happy I did it,” said Herron.

Hartzel was excited to get her hair cut with her friend, “I love my new look!” she said.

Stylists Nicole Hays and Lori Douglass-Hays, who cut the girls hair, enjoy giving back to the community. Most recently, they participated in Ambler’s First Friday event, providing braids, beads and temporary hair color to local kids.

There are a few local places that accept hair donations, among them is Locks of Love. The non-profit provides hairpieces to disadvantaged children under 21 who are suffering from long term medical hair loss.

Co-owner of Best Kept Secret, Heidi Hallowell, said, “We are proud to be a participating salon for this organization helping to retore children’s self esteem and confidence. In today’s trying economy it’s hard to donate money sometimes and this is a great way to give back pact of you. So many reasons to give back to the community, do it as a mitzvah, communion service or just to make a peer or child smile when they look in the mirror, that is why we do it.”
