Whitpain Eliminates Wayne, Advances to Match Up With Fort Washington

Pennsylvania American Legion Region 3 Tournament, winner advances to state tournament.

Whitpain rebounded from an opening round 16-5 loss to defending state champion Spring City by handing the “Big Blue” from Wayne, the Main Line League runner up, a 14-9 loss thus eliminating Wayne from the Pennsylvania American Legion Region Three tournament, held at Owen J. Roberts High School.

Whitpain got an outstanding effort for pitcher Will Ligus, who battled all game, at one point retired 14 consecutive Wayne batters allowing the Whitpain bats time to get going.

Led by , who reached ball all five times on Sunday, scoring three runs and slamming a triple, Whtipain racked up an eight spot in the pivotal fourth inning. Peter Bogdon led off the third inning by crushing a sole home run clearing the ten foot high wall, to tie the game at four in the third frame.

“We didn’t play our game,” said Whitpain manager Mike Basile after Saturday’s opening round loss. “This is new territory for all of our guys, the regional is a big deal and I think we came out a little nervous today. We have Ligus going tomorrow for us and I think today will sink in by them.”

As it turns out as a coach, Basile is a pretty good fortune teller, as the Whitpain squad played with more relaxed and with the confidence that helped them unseat eight time Greater Norristown champ J.P. Mascaro.

“We got a great effort from Will, which I knew we would,” said Basile. “It’s all about playing on Monday and with the win we have accomplished that, after the weekend there are only two teams with out a loss, everybody has to bring their best game to the table, I think we are ready and have been hitting the ball extremely well.”

Whitpain will face Lower Montco champion Fort Washington, renewing a Wissahickon vs Upper Dublin rivalry as the squads take the field at 4 p.m. with the winner advancing to the semi-final round on Tuesday and the loser going home with their season over.
