Wissahickon School Board Sets 1.7 Percent Limit on Any Possible Tax Increase

The Board passed a resolution stating the School Board will not raise the tax rate above the Department of Education Index of 1.7 percent.

The passed Resolution No. W-18-11, which states the Board will not raise the tax rate above the Department of Education established Index of 1.7 percent.

The vote would keep Wissahickon within the state approved standards for raising taxes. If the Board chose not to vote on the resolution, the administration would need to look into applying for an exemption.

Barbara Moyer asked if the vote could be held off until the next board meeting so the new board could vote on it. The vote doesn’t need to be taken until Jan. 3.

Janice Singer said if the board doesn’t pass this resolution, they would have to pass a preliminary budget at the Dec. 12 meeting.

Moyer also asked if the special education and PSERs exemptions the district had applied for in the 2010-11 school year were still available in this budget season. They are.

“We would have to use a significant amount of our fund balance to cover the special education and PSERS increase,” said Moyer.

“We are setting a 1.7 percent limit,” said Board president Young Park. “We have to live within our means, including our fund balance.”

The vote passed 6-1-1, with Moyer dissenting and Patricia Latimer abstaining.
