Wissahickon Schools Open; Stony Creek Students Meet Their Mascot
"Walkers" and students hopping off buses were greeted in person by their mascot that used to just be a logo.
As Wissahickon schools opened the doors for the start of a new school year Monday, Stony Creek Elementary students were greeted with a surprise: their mascot.
An owl is the school’s long-standing mascot logo, but a costumed owl waved to “walkers” who strolled up the sidewalk and students that hopped off their buses.
The friendly owl flapped his wings, but did not say a word.

“There were no tears," said Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) co-president Doris Fox.
Principal Gary Abbamond told students they could high-five the unnamed owl as they entered the building to head to their new classrooms and teachers.

Fox said Abbamond will hold a contest for students to choose a name for the Stony Creek mascot.
After trying two years to get an owl costume, PTO bought one this summer, said Fox.
Parents will take turns wearing it for assemblies, back-to-school picnics and family fun nights, Fox said.
