9th Annual Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive at Lankenau Medical Center Set for October 19 and 20

Blood drive in memory of Wynnewood resident will also support the Ardmore Avenue Community Center and Main Line Meals on Wheels

Schedule an appointment to save lives by donating blood! The 9th Annual Carol H. Axelrod Memorial Blood Drive at Lankenau Medical Center will take place on October 19 and 20, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., at Lankenau’s Annenberg Conference Center. For every unit of blood collected, Axelrod's family will make donations to Main Line Meals on Wheels, which provides nutritious meals to senior citizens and homebound or convalescing residents of the Main Line, and to the Ardmore Avenue Community Center, which offers a wide range of educational, social, cultural, and recreational resources and opportunities to young people in Ardmore and neighboring communities.

All presenting blood donors will receive free parking, a gift bag, and free entry into prize drawings. Appointments are available at 15-minute intervals. To schedule an appointment to donate blood, visit www.chablooddrive.orgor call 1-800-RED-CROSS (mention sponsor code “CHAMemorial”). Every unit of donated blood can be separated into components that can be given to as many as three patients, meaning that one donor can help save three lives.

This special blood drive was founded in memory of Wynnewood resident Carol Axelrod, who became dependent on regular transfusions of blood and platelets while receiving treatment for multiple myeloma, an incurable cancer of the blood and bone marrow. The transfusions, which she received at Lankenau, allowed her to enjoy good quality of life and spend time with friends and family. After Axelrod died, her family started the blood drive as a way of helping other patients through similar experiences.

Through the family’s “Community CHAllenge,” the blood drive will also support Main Line Meals on Wheels and the Ardmore Avenue Community Center. For every unit of blood collected, Axelrod’s family will make a donation to these groups. If the blood drive collection surpasses last year’s total of 257 units, the family will double their donations.
