Elysian Camerata Concert at St. Asaph Church March 3

Now in their eighth season as one of Philadelphia’s most respected chamber music ensembles, Elysian Camerata returns to their historic Church of St. Asaph “home base” with a concert on Sunday, March 3, 2013, at 3pm. The program consists of pieces by Mozart, Barber, and Mendelssohn.

This season will be one of the Elysians’ most ambitious, with more than a dozen concerts. In addition to their four scheduled performances at St. Asaph, their season includes return engagements to concert series in Haddonfield, New Jersey and Ambler, Pennsylvania, and a performance in Charleston, West Virginia in April 2013.

Samuel Barber, one of the best-known 20th century American composers, hailed from West Chester, Pennsylvania. Barber arranged the second movement of the B minor String Quartet for full orchestra. The “Adagio for Strings”, as it is known, is one of the most well known pieces in today’s orchestra repertoire.

The Church of St. Asaph was built in 1888. Designed by architect Theophilus P. Chandler, the Victorian Gothic building was built to resemble the St. Asaph Cathedral in Wales, reflecting the origin of the Bala Cynwyd area's first settlers. Today, the church hosts a full program of art and music for the benefit of its congregation and the community at large.

A free will offering of $15.00 is suggested; there will be a reception following the concert. The Church of St. Asaph is located at 27 Conshohocken State Rd. in Bala Cynwyd, PA. Newly appointed to the PennPAT (PA Performing Artists on Tour) Artist Roster, the Elysian Camerata is a Philadelphia-based ensemble that began as the occasional collaboration of few close friends, who all felt a common bond in their love for chamber music. This dynamic ensemble, comprised of 2 violins, 2 violas, cello and piano, explores the unlimited diversity that exists in the chamber music repertoire. They present programs that offer a variety of ensemble sizes and types, created both from within their core group as well as with guest artists.
