Barbara Browne will be performing Francis Poulenc (1899-1963): The Story of Babar the Elephant, for piano and narrator (1940) with words by Jean de Brunhof. Apparently Poulenc’s three-year-old cousin Sophie, who did not appreciate Poulenc’s musical style, placed her copy of “Babar the Elephant” upside down on the piano’s music stand and said, “Play this.” Poulenc then added accompaniment to the text for Sophie who invited all her friends to come hear.
Barbara is performing this delightful piece in the store on Sat morning at 11:00 in the hopes that parents will bring their children to listen to the story of the lovable Babar.
