GIANT Food Stores introduces Nature’s Promise Marine Stewardship Council-certified canned tuna

MSC certification given to seafood from fisheries that meet council's strict standard for sustainability

GIANT Food Stores today announced its Nature’s Promise chunk light canned tuna (skipjack) and Nature’s Promise solid white canned tuna (albacore) have been Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) –certified.

MSC certification is given to seafood from fisheries that meet the council’s strict standard for sustainability and ensure that fish are caught at levels that allow fish populations and the ecosystems on which they depend to remain healthy and productive for the future. Nature’s Promise canned tuna is caught using a “one-by-one” method, one line to catch one fish at a time. This is considered to be the most sustainable fishing method, minimizing damage to other sea life. Nature’s Promise chunk light tuna is caught via a fishing pole and line and Nature’s Promise solid while tuna is caught via pole and line or troll caught, towing a baited hook or lure behind a slow moving vessel.

“GIANT is committed to being a responsible retailer and lessening the environmental impact of our operations,” said Tom Lenkevich, GIANT president. “This includes sustainably sourcing a variety of products found in our stores, including our Nature’s Promise canned tuna, to ensure the longevity of the fishery or farm.”

Nature’s Promise canned tuna is sold at all GIANT stores. Earlier this year, GIANT announced that all seafood sold from the service counters is 100% sustainably and responsibly sourced. In addition, 100% of GIANT Nature’s Promise and Own Brand seafood products are also sustainably sourced, including frozen shrimp. Nature’s Promise is GIANT’S private label line for organic and “free from” products. In total, customers will find more than 200 sustainable seafood items at GIANT.
