Hurt Lower Merion Firefighters Discharged From Hospital
Belmont Hills Fire Company firefighters Sam Shaffer, 17, and Alex Fischer, 22, are recovering from the July 24 incident on Interstate 76.
LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — Two Lower Merion Township firefighters who were injured by an alleged drunk driver have been sent home from the hospital.
According to the Lower Merion Fire Department, Belmont Hills Fire Company firefighters Sam Shaffer, 17, and Alex Fischer, 22, have been released from care following the July 24 crash on Interstate 76.
The crash also killed fellow firefighter Thomas Royds and injured a Pennsylvania State Police trooper.

Shaffer suffered serious head injuries, including an orbital fracture to his right eye, brain bleed and severe concussion, along with a leg injury with a torn ACL. He was released from the hospital on Wednesday.

Fischer suffered a severe leg injury, requiring surgery. He was released from the hospital Thursday and was transferred to a rehabilitation center to receive physical therapy for several weeks.

The crash led to DUI and related charges being filed against Jacquelyn Walker, 63, of New Jersey.
