LMSD Honors Merit Scholarship Semifinalists, Commended Students

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — Numerous standout students in the Lower Merion School District were honored by the Lower Merion Board of School Directors this week for their academic achievements in the National Merit Scholarship program

On Monday, the board recognized 33 district students — 24 from Lower Merion High School and nine from Harriton High School — for advancing in to the semifinalist stage of the program.

The semifinalists are among 16,000 recognized nationwide in the 66th annual National Merit Scholarship Program.

These seniors have a chance to continue in the competition for roughly 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring.

The district also recognized 39 commended students — 23 from Lower Merion HS and 16 from Harriton HS — Monday. They are among about 34,000 recognized nationwide.

Commended Students are named based on a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some may be candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses.
