Lower Merion Among PA's Top 10 Safest Cities, Study Says

Using FBI and Census data, SafeHome.org calculated the safest cities in Pennsylvania, and Lower Merion fared quite well.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — A new study from SafeHome.org lists the safest cities in Pennsylvania. And Lower Merion Township was among the top 10.

In the study, SafeHome analysts looked at FBI Uniform Crime Reporting and 2010 Census data to generate the ranks.

Lower Merion Township was ranked No. 5.

It was given an overall safety score of 85.57.

With that rating, Lower Merion was also ranked No. 89 among the safest cities in the United States in SafeHome's national ranks. See the national ranks here.

According to SafeHome, the township's violent crimes are trending downward, but the property crimes are trending upward.

First and foremost is the FBI’s latest report of how many and what types of crimes occurred in each city over a single year. The city’s crime trends are also considered; in other words, cities where crime is on the decline are given a higher Safety Score and vice-versa. SafeHome also looked at the number of law enforcement officers compared to the population.

Northampton Township was ranked No. 1 in PA with an overall safety rating of 90.97.

Lancaster rounded out the top 25, with an overall score of 68.13.
