Lower Merion Club Raises $150K To Build Schools In Haiti

LOWER MERION, PA – The "buildOn" clubs at Lower Merion and Harriton high schools made some serious contributions to rural, impoverished areas in Haiti recently. The clubs from both Lower Merion School District schools generated $150,000 to build schools in the struggling areas.

According to the district, the clubs' Trek Teams raised the money over seven months, which entails "around the clock" fundraising.

The money will be used to build two schools in the La Civette and Platon Robert areas of Haiti. Money will also go toward adult literacy programs in those areas, the district said.

According to the district, almost half of all primary school-age children in Haiti do not attend school, and Haitian public schools have the capacity to serve only one quarter of the school-age population.

Students from both clubs recently traveled to Haiti where they spent two weeks immersing themselves in Haitian culture.

The clubs have built 105 schools in Haiti since 2001, according to the district. That number is now 107 thanks to the amazing students at Lower Merion and Harriton high schools.
