Lower Merion Firefighter Dies Battling Structure Fire

Volunteer firefighter Sean W. DeMuynck died Monday, the day he planned to move back to Canada with his wife, according to fire officials.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — A volunteer Lower Merion Township firefighter battling a structure fire on the 4th of July, according to officials.

Sean W. DeMuynck, 35, died at 12:22 a.m. Monday, Lower Merion Township officials said.

According to Lower Merion Township, Penn Wynne/Overbrook Hills Fire Company was called to Rosedale Road at about 10:34 p.m. on the 4th of July for a structure fire.

Firefighters found the structure heavily involved and began working to extinguish the blaze.

They later went into the structure and then got a mayday call from DeMuynck, who was found on the third floor of the building.

DeMuynck was unresponsive and responders took him to Lankenau Hospital where he was later pronounced dead at 12:22 a.m. Monday.

"Firefighter DeMuynck faithfully served the citizens of Penn Wynne and Lower Merion Township as a Volunteer Firefighter since August of 2019," the fire department said in a statement. "He is survived by his wife and parents. Firefighter DeMuynck and his wife are Canadian and planned to move back home to rejoin their family today, July 5, 2021. Firefighter DeMuynck will be missed."

Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
