Lower Merion Misled, Overtaxed Public, Suit Alleges

LOWER MERION, PA -- The Lower Merion School District has misled the public regarding its financial state and its use of taxpayer money, alleges a local lawyer.

A class-action lawsuit has been field against the district by Arthur Wolk, a Gladwyne lawyer that is seeking a five-year moratorium on tax increases, according to Philly.com.

The district reportedly called the suit ”baseless” and ”offensive.”

The lawsuit primarily takes issue with a $55 million surplus the district took, the report states.

Lower Merion is consistently among the region’s highest ranked school district, but that has come at the price of outrageous taxes, Wolk states, citing a 40 percent increase since 2007.

The lawsuit alleges the district employed secret, corrupt, and dishonest methods to prevent parents and the public from learning details of financials, spending way too much on things like the construction of the new schools and student laptops, the report states.
