Masks Now Optional In Lower Merion School District Buildings

Superintendent Khalid Mumin in a letter to the community Sunday said masks are optional in all district buildings effective Monday.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — After initially making masking optional for only outdoor activities in the Lower Merion School District, officials announced the option for masking has been expanded to include indoor areas of district buildings.

Superintendent Khalid Mumin in a letter to the community Sunday said masks are optional in all district buildings effective Monday.

The change comes after the district's Health and Safety Team and Solicitor reviewed federal, state, and county guidance.

"Moving forward, our LMSD Health and Safety Team will continue to review the COVID-19 mitigation practices currently in place — such as distancing at lunch — and adjust them according to the guidance," Mumin said. "We will continue to share updates with the community. I believe we are seeing the proverbial 'light at the end of the tunnel' and I look forward seeing the smiling faces of many of our staff and students."

While masking now optional in buildings, masks are still required on school buses, according to federal mandates.

Additionally, masks may also be required for specific time periods for people returning from isolation or quarantine, who are participating in"Mask-to-Stay" or "Test-to-Stay," or who fall into other criteria as required by the Montgomery County Office of Public Health.

District families are asked to use the daily screening tool online here and keep symptomatic children home from school.
