She has been with the district for 23 years and overall has a 35-year-long education career.

Heffron said the decision, while tough, was made in order to spend more time with her family, who she said lives several hours from the Lower Merion area.

"I have been very fortunate to have been part of such a special community," she said in her letter to the community. "Part of the difficulty in deciding to retire is knowing that I will be leaving this wonderful group of children."

She said Assistant Superintendent Dr. Scott Eveslage and other district administrators will be working to chose Merion Elementary School's next principal.

"I have every confidence that the individual selected to lead the school forward will continue to keep our students at the center of what we know," she said.

Heffron joined the district in 1996.
