Scammers Posing As Lower Merion Police Officers
Lower Merion Police said scammers have been targeting area residents via phone calls in which they claim to be members of the department.
LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — Police in Lower Merion Township are warning residents of scammers posing as officers in attempted to bilk people out of their hard-earned money.
According to police, these schemers will call their targets and claim to "urgently" need "legal information" while pretending to be members of the Lower Merion Police Department.
Police said these calls are illegitimate and urge anyone who gets such a call to immediately hang up.

If a resident gets a call like this, do not call the number back, but do contact Lower Merion Police at 610-649-1000 or 911.
"If you have any doubt about the veracity of the Officer contacting you in any situation, you can always contact us to verify their information," police said.

Police iterated that they do not serve warrants over the phone, or demand immediate payment for outstanding warrants, tickets, subpoenas, or traffic violations. Police said they do not collect monies on behalf of the courts over the phone, either.
Additionally, police will not demand social security information, bank account numbers, bank card, electronic payment, or social media information over the phone.
Lastly, they will not demand that confirmation of demographics or other personal details over the phone unless they are engaging in a follow-up call in which both parties know each other.
