Scammers Posing As Lower Merion Police Over Phone Calls

Police said scammers are using "spoofed" numbers to appear as though the calls are from police and then demand payments over the phone.

LOWER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — Residents in Lower Merion are reporting calls from scammers who claim to be police and demand money over the phone with the threat of a warrant arrest, Lower Merion Police said.

According to police, the scammers make their number appear as the number from the Lower Merion Police Department.

The scammers tell their targets they "missed subpoena to appear in court" and then demand payment via the phone while threatening a "warrant for immediate arrest."

Police said the scammers often claim to be a "sergeant" or a "detective."

Police urge residents who get such a call to hang up immediately.

"If the police have a reason to contact you, we will be happy to provide a callback number for verification of our identity," Lower Merion Police said. "This number will be in our local area code only. We have badge numbers, supervisors to contact, and a physical address where you can meet us face to face. If you have any reason to doubt the legitimacy of a police contact, hang up and dial 911. If need be, a uniformed officer can respond to your home or business to confirm our identity."
