Smoking Patient May Have Started Fire At Lankenau Medical Center

A small fire broke out Friday at Lankenau Medical Center and officials say it's believed a patient smoking in a room caused the incident.

ARDMORE, PA — A small fire that started at a Main Line medical facility may have been started by a patient who was smoking.

According to Main Line Health and the Penn Wynne Fire Company, the fire broke out Friday evening in Lankenau Medical Center's One Pavilion.

Main Line Health said in a news release that the small fire began in a patient room, and that the patient may have been smoking a cigarette.

The fire was out when firefighters arrived, as the sprinkler system activated and staffers quickly responded when the alarm sounded.

"The staff responded immediately, quickly contained the fire and patients on that floor were immediately and safely evacuated to another location in the hospital," Main Line Health said in its news release. "Those patients are all in stable condition and no other patients in the hospital were affected."

"Kudos to the quick response of the Lankenau Medical Center clinicians," the fire company said in a social media post.

Penn Wynne firefighters worked to shut down the sprinkler system, vent the area of smoke, and assist with standing water and water damage on the floors below.

Main Line Health thanked Penn Wynne fire crews for their help with the incident.
