The concert will also honor Susan Starr, a silver medalist of the Tchaikovsky Competition. There will be a showing of an excerpt from the documentary “Susan Starr.” Directed by D. A. Pennebaker and Robert Drew for Time-Life Broadcast, the documentary won “Outstanding Film of the Year” at the London Film Festival in 1963, and is considered a pioneering film of American Cinéma Vérité.

The film follows three days in the life of Susan Starr (born Susan Schwartz), competitor in the finals of the Dimitri Mitropoulos International Piano Competition, where Arthur Rubenstein was one of the judges. The documentary shows her during the competition at the Metropolitan Opera House, backstage as her rivals perform, meeting her future husband (one of the other competitors), and onstage as she performs the Tchaikovsky concerto with the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Theodore Bloomfield.

“I was at the rehearsal on Saturday and the NBS orchestra is wonderful. I have never before seen an orchestra with members ranging from 6 to 16. Don't miss this charming performance that includes the incredible voice of Leah Bedenko.”  - Michael Kearney, board member and parent of NBS student
