Teen Charged In Beloved Philly DJ's Fatal Hit-And-Run Crash

Philadelphia Police said a teenage boy is charged with a slew of crimes in connection with the crash that killed Hector "June" Rodriguez.

PHILADELPHIA — A teenage boy is in police custody and charged with numerous crimes in connection with a December hit-and-run crash that killed a beloved Philadelphia DJ.

According to Philadelphia Police, the boy, 17 years old and from Philadelphia, is charged with homicide by vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, driving without a license, accidents involving death, and more crimes. His identity was not released.

Police said he fatally struck Hector "June" Rodriguez, a longtime DJ at Bob and Barbara's Lounge.

Police said Rodriguez was riding a bicycle east on Lancaster Avenue at about 3:44 a.m. on Dec. 20. A car described as a Jeep Cherokee, was also heading east on Lancaster Avenue.

When Rodriguez went to turn left to head south on North 56th Street, the vehicle struck him, police said. After striking Rodriguez, the vehicle swerved, then kept going west on Lancaster Avenue, according to police.

Rodriguez was taken to Lankenau Hospital, where died 4:47 a.m.

Police in early January identified the striking vehicle, confirmed to be a Jeep Cherokee.

The teenage driver turned himself into police Monday with his mother after investigators developed him as a suspect, and obtained a warrant for his arrest, according to authorities.
