Tracking Budget Votes in 140 Characters or Less

The following tweets were posted @ArdmorePatch throughout the Board of Commissioners' budget discussion on Dec. 1.

After two and a half hours of public comment, the Lower Merion Board of Commissioners , albeit over another four and a half hours, at the second public hearing on the budget on Wednesday, Dec. 1.

Below is a brief summary of the commissioner's debate, first published on the Ardmore-Merion-Wynnewood Patch twitter feed @ArdmorePatch. A twitter summary of the public comment is also available – .

  • Commissioners making opening statements, Gelber and Gordon express interest reducing tax increase, along with Republicans (9:55 p.m.)

  • Gordon says he is in favor of reducing the fund balance (surplus funds) and township employee benefits (10:07)
  • Brown said her research shows Lower Merion collects the most tax dollars per capita than all 12 "comparable" townships in Cleland's budget (10:16)
  • Rogan says that the township should discuss implementing an earned income tax in addition to a real estate tax (to adjust tax burden) (10:31)

The meeting adjourned at 1:10 a.m. Commissioner Taylor made a motion to approve the township's capital improvement program, which was rejected by a 7-6 vote so the commissioners would have more time to review individual projects. Commissioners Gelber, Gordon and Churchill joined Brown, Zelov, Gould and Rosenzweig in opposition to passing the plan.
