Wynnewood's Lankenau Hospital Giving Fresh Produce To Patients

Nutrition is at the forefront at Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, as medical professional are sending patients home with locally grown, organic vegetables to promote healthier eating and overall better nutrition education.
The hospital has partnered with Green Partners – a local produce and agriculture advocacy organization – to grow lots of fresh, organic produce to give patients when they have a visit to the hospital. The produce is even grown on the hospital's campus.
According to Green Partners' website, campus farm features educational areas, a greenhouse, compost area, vertical gardens and space for herbs, seeds, flowers, fruits, and even a tasting station.

CBS Philly reports the crops are given to needy patients who receive care at the hospital. Patients also can get nutritional education and cooking tips in hospital waiting rooms, the outlet reports.
According to Green Partners, the half acre hospital garden produces more than 2,000 lbs of organic produce yearly. The veggies go to Lankenau’s farmer’s market for patients, visitors, and employees and to area food banks. The produce is also put to use in cooking classes at the hospital.

The farm also serves as a hands-on classroom for students who come to Lankenau for health education, Green Partners says. Medical students also tour the farm and take courses related to the role of fresh vegetables and healthy eating in preventive care, according to the organization's website.
