169 Pep Boys Employees Laid Off At Main Line Headquarters

BALA CYNWYD, PA — Mavis Tire has laid off over 150 employees from Pep Boys corporate headquarters in Bala Cynwyd after acquiring the auto-repair competitor.

Mavis recently purchased Pep Boys for $700 million, growing the company's footprint to more than 4,400 auto shops across the continent. As a result, Mavis has laid off 169 corporate employees who worked at Pep Boys headquarters.

Impacted employees first received "electronic notice" of their pending layoffs on Sept. 14, according to a WARN ACT Notice of Mass Layoff that Mavis issued last week.

The layoffs will take effect in phases from Dec. 31 through Feb. 19.

Pep Boys was headquartered at 1 Presidential Blvd., a multi-tenant office building overlooking City Avenue. Earlier this year, Pep Boys signed a lease to double its office space in the complex.

But in July, Mavis announced an agreement to acquire Pep Boys and its 800 auto shops.

In the layoff notice, Mavis said the layoffs are part of "a reorganization of the Pep Boys corporate support services."

Mavis didn't indicate whether it will close the office. A company spokesperson declined comment.
