A Look Back at the Lady Aces

A team worth waiting for.

This Viewfinder looks back on the playoff season of Lower Merion High School's girls varsity basketball team, the Lady Aces.

In over 40 years of shooting sports from sand lot to professional, I have photographed hundreds of teams and covered thousands of games. In no more than a handful of cases have I developed an attachment to a team.  When that happened, it was because the team was exceptional not only by winning and being high-spirited but also by never becoming full of themselves. The 2011 Lady Aces were one of those teams.

On the court this season, the Aces showed themselves to be talented, determined, poised, and humble winners. And winners they were and are.  The way they fought back against adversity, played through pain, overcame inexperience, and never quit trying hard.

Robert Horry who played 16 seasons in the NBA, once said, "Pressure can burst a pipe or make a diamond."  This squad turned out to be a diamond. They turned the pressure of hotly contested games into pure energy. Each and every one of them should be proud. They had good, no, make that excellent coaching. But as any excellent coach will tell you: no matter how good the driver, it is the horses that pull the wagon.

I want to recognize their achievements with this brief visual homage. I put no names to the photos because each of them was all of them.  They were in that sense the personification of teamwork.  Go Aces!
