crocheted rag rugs

In this fun & satisfying three hour workshop, you will learn how to make a crocheted rag rug!  Up-cycle and re-purpose all that mending that has been driving you crazy, or the bits of fabric that are just too beautiful to get rid of.   Use everything from old jeans to a  brand new length of cloth that called your name at the fabric store, and turn them into a warm and inviting art piece in your home .  Students can create a floor covering with fabric that tells their personal story, and will be taught how to begin and continue a traditional oval rag rug.

Rag rugs have a primarily regional history, born out of recessional times, where materials and decorative supplies were scarce.  Specific techniques and styles of rugs vary widely from place to place, depending on the ethnic traditions and the materials available, but were generally created from the leftover fabrics that were worn out from their intended use.

Some suggestions: Choose one yard from 10 different fabrics, or find an old stash of fabric from home; old flannel sheets, old clothing that will never be mended – just about anything can be used.  No sewing skills are necessary.
