Main Line Native, Former Colorado Governor, Running For President

John Hickenlooper served as Colorado's governor from 2011 to 2019. Now, the Narberth native is setting his sights on the Oval Office.

NARBERTH, PA — A son of the Main Line is running for president. John Hickenlooper, a Narberth native and former governor of Colorado, announced his bid for the presidency Monday, March 4.

Hickenlooper, a 67-year-old Democrat, released a video titled "Standing Tall" announcing his candidacy Monday.

The video touts the Haverford School grad's business and political career in Colorado.

He opened a brewpub in Denver in 1988 after losing his geologist job due to economic reasons. Hickenlooper then leveraged his success and clout to win the Denver mayoral seat in 2003.

He went on to win the Governor's race in 2001 and ended his time in office Jan. 8, 2019.

Hickenlooper is planning to hold his first campaign event Thursday in Denver.

According to Hickenlooper, healthcare is a right, not a privilege.

"We expanded Medicaid, created a health exchange, and now, nearly 95% of Coloradans have healthcare coverage," he said on Twitter Monday.

He also said the United States must re-enter the Paris Climate Agreement to combat climate change.

"In CO, I got industry and environmentalists together to set some of the strictest methane regulations in the US, taking the equivalent of 320,000 cars off the road each year," he tweeted.
