2010 Census Reveals Great Progress in Baldwin Township

Small community sees big gains in household income and college graduates.

The results are in from the Twenty-third United States Census, commonly referred to as the 2010 Census, and perhaps the secret is finally out: Baldwin Township is a good place to be. And it's getting even better.

Baldwin Township, easily the smallest municipality in the Baldwin-Whitehall school district in terms of both land and residents, has made significant gains in the areas of median household income and percentage of college graduates, according to the latest national census.

The 2010 Census measured each municipality in the country, and through an American Community Survey, Baldwin Township is shown to have increased its median household income to $63,125 per year, up 40.1 percent from 2000, even adjusting for inflation. In addition, 28.5 percent of Baldwin Township residents are now college graduates, a 46.6-percent increase from 2000.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette detailed these findings in its Dec. 23 issue. Baldwin Township is one of nine communities singled out by the Post-Gazette as having marked improvement in both areas.

"My initial reaction was that the boost in the college graduates was due to the poor economy," said Tim McAloon, Director of the Project Management Office for the Pittsburgh office of Fiserv, Inc., and a Baldwin Township resident for the past 20 years.

"I thought a number of recent graduates might be living at home instead of going out on their own. But after considering the changes in my neighborhood, I think the real answer is that a number of younger folks see the benefit of living in the township. It is a very affordable and safe neighborhood that is part of a solid school district while being close to Downtown.

"Since we are empty-nesters, my wife and I have considered leaving the neighborhood, but we have found the pluses have outweighed the minuses. It is a nice place to live."
