BALDWIN, PA - Agnew Road residents could be getting plenty of new neighbors. Pittsburgh officials plan to develop housing bear them on about 75 acres of what currently is a tranquil wooded area.
The property to be developed is in an known as Hays Woods, a 640-acre site the city purchased last year for $5 million. The vast majority of the land is located in the Hays section of Pittsburgh, but about 20 acres are directly over the city line in Baldwin.
The city bought Hays Woods from developer Charles Betters of Beaver County, after he spent more than a decade unsuccessfully attempting to develop a horseracing track, casino and retail and residential areas on the site.
