Baldwin Athlete Is All-American

Now, the rest of the country knows about Luke Smorey, too.

After aΒ WPIAL championship in the boys javelin thrown this springβ€”and a few stellar football seasonsβ€”folks from around Pittsburgh know what kind of an athlete thatΒ Luke Smorey is.

Now, so does the rest of the country.

Smorey, who won't start his senior year at Baldwin High School until August, earned All-America track & fieldΒ status at theΒ National Scholastic Athletics Foundation'sΒ New Balance NationalsΒ this month. Smorey placed sixthΒ out of a field of 30 of the best boys high school javelin throwers in the country with a toss of 59.52 meters, or 195 feet, 3 inches at the meet held atΒ North Carolina A&T State UniversityΒ from June 14-16.

Smorey's personal-best toss is 200 feet, 3 inches, which he accomplished at the WPIAL championships on May 16. His throw ofΒ 188 feet at the state championships laterΒ in MayΒ earned him a bronze medal at that meet.
