Baldwin H.S. Students Hosting 'Bunny's Hop' to Help Coach Beat Cancer

Cross country runners know a thing or two about long journeys. And Baldwin High School's co-head coach for girls cross country knows a thing or three about them.

Bonita "Bunny" Schmidt of Whitehall Borough is on her third journey to beat cancer. The winningest coach in team history, Schmidt has survived two battles with breast cancer and has since been diagnosed with bone cancer.

And after so many years of giving her limited time and energy to Baldwin's runners, those runners are organizing an event to give something back to Coach Bunny.

"Bunny's Hop," a fun run/walk starting at the Baldwin High track in Whitehall, will be held on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 1 p.m. There is no entrance fee to attend the event and/or to participate in it, but donations are being accepted at the gate, with all money going straight to Schmidt to help with her latest medical expenses.

The organizers have created a Facebook page for the event in hopes of spreading the word and attracting cross country alumni and other community members.

The run will be a timed event with small, non-cash prizes awarded to the overall top males and females and the top male and female alumni. It will span the high school's 3.1-mile cross country course.

Walkers can use the course, as well, or stick strictly to the high-school track.

Baked goods will be available for the price of donations.
