The man apparently entered the sewer to make brick repairs.

BALDWIN, PA - Firefighters had to rescue a man who removed a manhole cover, climbed into a sewer and may have been overcome by chemical fumes or sewer gas. The incident occurred Monday afternoon in the 900 block on Angelo Drive.

The man was taken to the hospital and reportedly is in critical condition.

KDKA- TV reported that the unidentified man, thought to be in his early 70s, evidently entered the sewer to work on the bricks lining the manhole wall. The reason the man did that remains unclear.
