Highlanders Gymnasts Compete at 2011 State Individual Championships

BHS fields athletes in the Gold and Silver divisions.

 sent seven athletes to the 2011 Pennsylvania Classic individual gymnastics championships, which were held at  from Friday-Saturday, Feb. 25-26.

Baldwin had three athletes compete in the PA Classic's Gold Division, just one level shy of the highest, or Diamond, level. They were sophomores Arisia May and Maura Costa and freshman Jill McDonnell.

May captured third-place honors in the Gold Division's all-around competition with a total of 34.983 points, bolstered by a fourth-place, 8.633-points performance on the uneven bars. May also placed eighth in the vault event with a score of 9.200, 10th in the floor exercise with an 8.767 score and 13th on the balance beam with an 8.383.

McDonnell finished 11th in the Gold Division all-around with 34.234 points. She placed sixth on the bars with an 8.517 score, 13th on the vault with a 9.033, 15th on the beam with an 8.167 and 17th on the floor with an 8.517.

Twenty-five athletes competed for the all-around Gold Division title, not including Costa, who entered Gold competitions in only the bars, beam and vault events. Costa was quite impressive, though, earning second place on the bars with 8.817 points, third place on the beam with 8.850 and sixth place on the vault with 9.300.

Baldwin's senior Sam Foster, freshman Alexa Przywara and sophomores Lexi Rebel and Hannah Schmitt each competed in the Silver Division of these state championships; though, none of them competed for an all-around title.

Foster tied for fourth place on the vault in this very large division with 8.817 points. She also placed 33rd on the floor with a 7.633 score.

Przywara was 23rd on the floor with a 7.933 score and 33rd on the bars with a score of 6.683.

Rebel and Schmitt both competed in one Silver event. Rebel scored a 7.967 on the floor to place 22nd, while Schmitt placed 42nd on the vault with a 7.917.

No Highlanders competed in the Bronze, or lowest, division of the PA Classic individual championships.

Baldwin will compete next in the Pennsylvania Classic team gymnastics championships in Chambersburg, Pa., on March 5.
