2 Bensalem Students Get National Merit Nod

The National Merit Scholarship "commended students" are seniors and will be eligible for scholarships from participating groups.

BENSALEM, PA — Two seniors at Bensalem High School have been named "commended students" by the 2019 National Merit Scholarship program.

Abdullah Mahmood and Amy Truong received letters of commendation from the program, presented by BHS Principal William Ferrara. Commended students are recognized for exceptional academic promise demonstrated by their performance on the qualifying test used for program entry.

They are named on the basis of a nationally applied selection index score. While commended students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of them become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by participating businesses and other groups.

Mahmood has been a principal's honor roll student throughout high school, as well as an AP scholar. He is a member of National Honor Society, Community Service Club, Kick Butts Generation and the tennis team. He placed second in a Veterans of Foreign Wars regional essay competition. Outside of school, he enjoys reading and volunteering at Juniper Village and plans on going to medical school and becoming an ophthalmologist.

Truong is an AP scholar and has been on the principal’s list honor roll throughout high school. as well. She is a member of Community Service Club and Multi-Cultural Club and enjoys playing volleyball and piano. She plans to major in psychology in college.
