Bensalem HS Mock Election Puts Clinton In Office

The Bensalem High School hosted a mock election Monday ahead of Tuesday's general election and the student body nearly went straight democrat with its victors.

In the general election, students chose Democrat Hillary Clinton over Republican Donald Trump for the presidency. Clinton earned 58.2 percent of the vote while Trump got just 32.8. Libertarian Gary Johnson took got 7 percent while Green party candidate Jill Stein got a meager 2 percent.

VP candidates Democrat Tim Kaine and Republican Mike Pence earned 55 percent and 33.7 percent of the vote from the students.

Democrat Katie McGinty won over incumbent Republican Sen. Pat Toomey 60.5 percent to 33 percent.

Newcomer Republican Brian Fitzpatrick edged out Democrat Steve Santarsiero in the students' House of Representatives race, earning 51.6 percent to Santarsiero's 48.4 percent.

Democrat Josh Shaprio won over Republican John Rafferty in the Attorney General race. Shapiro got 63.9 percent of students' vote while Rafferty earned 66.1 percent.

Lastly, the students selected Democrat Joe Torsella in the State Treasurer election over Republican Otto Voit (23 percent), Green Party candidate Kristin Combs (12.7 percent), and Libertarian James Babb (11.9 percent).

Students learned about the process from other students, saw key issues that the candidates support or are against, and saw both national and state nominees that adults will see on the ballots on Election Day.

The mock election was run by Bensalem High School Psychology and Government teacher Anthony Micalizzi and Government teacher, Andrew Foley, both of whom are pictured above.
