Caller Posing As Bensalem Police Officer Sought

Bensalem Police are investigating an incident Monday in which a "police lieutenant" tried to scam a woman to pay a business fine.

BENSALEM TOWNSHIP, PA —Bensalem Township Police are investigating an incident Monday in which a caller posed as a police lieutenant seeking money from a business to pay for a fine.

On Monday, Bensalem Police said a young woman female received a phone call while she was working at a local business on Bensalem Boulevard.

The caller identified himself as a "police lieutenant" and told her that counterfeit money had been used at the business and that a fine needed to be paid.

Police said the caller then said she needed to take money out of the register and then go to the ATM and withdraw more money for the "fine."

The woman got in her car and drove to a nearby ATM machine in an attempt to withdraw money, police said

Soon after, the woman's father was able to locate his daughter utilizing an app on her phone before any money was transferred to the caller.

Police said at no time was she in the company of the unknown caller and was not kidnapped. She was driving by herself until she was intercepted by her father.

Bensalem Police are investigating this incident to determine the caller's identity.

"Bensalem Police would like this incident to serve as a reminder that many different kinds of scams are being perpetrated by phone and that no police officer will ever call you to collect a fine," the police department said in a statement.
