2 Critical In Bensalem I-95 Tanker Crash

The tanker truck caught on fire at about 10:30 a.m. near the Woodhaven Drive exit.

BENSALEM, PA — Two people were in critical condition Thursday afternoon after a tanker truck caught fire on Interstate 95 in Bensalem.

The fiery crash shut down the Woodhaven Road exit ramp on I-95 northbound and snarled traffic as emergency crews responded. ABC-6 was reporting that two people were pulled from the tanker truck and taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The crash happened at about 10:15 a.m. on I-95 northbound at Exit 35, the Pa. 63 West/Woodhaven Road exit, according to PennDOT.

Fox 29 was reporting that the fire happened after the tanker truck overturned at about 10:30 a.m.

A photo taken by PennDOT traffic cameras showed the truck engulfed in flames and the interstate shut down in the area. The crash appears to have happened on the exit ramp, based on the image.

Philadelphia Fire Department and Bensalem Fire Department crews worked to extinguish the fire. Photos shared by the Philly fire department showed the tanker truck turned over on its side.

Shortly after 11 a.m., Bensalem Police confirmed they were working the crash as an active scene, but said they could not yet provide any details about the crash.

Thursday afternoon, PennDOT said the Woodhaven Road on-ramp and off-ramp would remain closed for both cleanup and repairs following the crash.

During the closure, northbound I-95 motorists wanting to access Woodhaven Road are directed to use Academy Road and U.S. 13 (Frankford Avenue/Bristol Pike) or Rt. 132 (Street Road) and U.S. 13 (Bristol Pike).

Eastbound Woodhaven Road motorists wanting to access northbound I-95 will be directed to use U.S. 13 (Bristol Pike) and Rt. 132 (Street Road).

Both ramps will remain closed while crews are making repairs made necessary by Thursday's crash, PennDOT said.

The ramp from eastbound Woodhaven Road to northbound I-95 was expected to reopen some time Thursday night, while more extensive repairs are needed to reopen the northbound I-95 ramp to Woodhaven Road. Those are expected to be completed by Friday night.
