Local Runners Bring Home Hardware from States
PIAA State track and field championships at Seth Grove Stadium in Shippensburg.
Every May, the finest track and field performers that the Keystone State has to offer, converge on the tiny college town of Shippensburg in search of something that is not available in the Wal Mart that welcomes visitors to town as they trickle off the interstate.
What they are all in search of is a PIAA State championship gold medal.
Thousands of track fans and hundreds of athletes make there way over the turnpike and cross-roads to have an opportunity to etch their names into the rich history of the championships.

Bensalem High School’s Brad Rivera qualified for the final with a preliminary time in the 800 meter run on Friday afternoon with a time of 1:55.82. In the championship run, Rivera used his kick to pass two runners in the final 200 meters to claim a seventh place medal, posting a time of 1:55.28 and securing his place on the podium.
“It’s awesome to be here,” said Rivera. “Just getting out of districts is so tough with the guys like Cho, Manley and Megaha in it. It just shows what a good group of runners there are, to look a crossed the starting line with the final eight, it’s a little intimidating, but also exciting.”

Bensalem wasn’t the only local team to bring home hardware as Holy Ghost Prep senior Christian Lupica used a semi final time of 14.65 in the 110 meter hurdles to secure his spot in the finale on Saturday.
After a fast start, Lupica battled an elite field and a 3.4 wind, shaving .15 off his qualifying time, crossing the line at 14.50 to snare a fourth place medal and end his high school career on the podium.
“This was such a great field,” said gold medal winner Strath Haven’s Chris Williams. “Scott, Lupica and day gave me all I wanted today, the wind was tough for all of us, but I am thrilled to be the state champ.”
